Description

ACQUANETTA
Prototype Festival/Beth Morrison Projects  January 2018

Acquanetta takes an abstracted behind-the-scenes look into the filming of the 1943 film “The Captive Wild Woman” focusing on its star, Mildred Davenport, better known to the world as Acquanetta. The opera meditates upon questions of identity by continuously shifting audience perspective from spectator to object. Whether looking through the eyes of the performer, the camera, or the audience, there is a question of whose gaze reigns supreme. In the competition between gazes, who is captive and who is free?
